Types of Connection in Quicken

Following are the ways through which Quicken interacts with your bank:
First is Express Web Connect i.e; Quicken Connect in Quicken for Mac.
Direct Connect
Web Connect
Using Web Connect you can simply download your transactions directly from your bank’s website and import them into Quicken.
And, using Express Web Connect or Quicken Connect and Direct Connect methods, Quicken communicates directly with your bank on your behalf. So, you don’t need any sign in into your bank’s website and manually download transactions, Quicken does this for you. Quicken can even talk back with Direct Connect.

How does it work
Although services supported by your bank based on that Quicken chooses the best available method to update transactions and balances. It is seen that Quicken always starts with Direct Connect if your bank supports it.
And if your bank doesn’t support Direct Connect, in that case, you’ll be automatically set up to use Express Web Connect/ Quicken Connect.

If in case I have already set up my account. How do I know which method I’m using?
You need to choose the Tools menu in the upper left and then select Account List. After that click Edit next to your account and then choose the Online Services tab at the top.
For Mac, you need to choose your account on the left and then click the Settings button on the bottom right.

Differences between the three methods are as follows:
Web Connect automatically download transactions from your financial institution whereas Direct Connect or Quicken Connect does not.
Express Web Connect and Web Connect both pay bills and transfer money directly from Quicken but Direct Connect not.
Your financial institution may require a monthly fee and separate activation for this service using Express Web Connect and Web Connect.
You must manually download a file from your financial institution’s website to update your transactions and account balances using Quicken Connect and Direct Connect.
